Bill Gates" new type of nuclear power plant will start operation, while Germany is completely abandoning nuclear energy. I wonder if they have any regrets?

Bill Gates" new type of nuclear power plant, which is a sodium-reactor nuclear power plant with a molten salt storage system, is under construction in Wyoming, USA and will begin operation in 2030. The plant produces two-thirds less nuclear waste compared to traditional nuclear power plants and can also generate hydrogen for the future demand from fuel cell vehicles.

Bill Gates is a well-known entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, former richest person in the world, and an active solver of global climate change issues. Recently, TerraPower, a company he founded in 2008, is partnering with the US Department of Energy to build a new type of nuclear power plant in Wyoming, USA, which is expected to start operation in 2030.

This nuclear power plant adopts a new type of sodium-reactor system. Unlike traditional reactors, this technology can utilize over 65% of the available energy in nuclear waste, greatly reducing the demand for nuclear waste disposal and storage. In addition, the new reactor is more stable and safe, with lower costs than traditional ones, avoiding incidents like the Fukushima nuclear accident.

It is expected that this new type of nuclear power plant will become an important choice for clean energy in the future, providing billions of people with clean, affordable, and reliable energy. It is said that TerraPower plans to build this type of nuclear power plant in multiple countries and promote the popularization of this safe, economic, and sustainable clean energy technology.

Unlike the United States embracing new nuclear technology, Germany made a remarkable decision after the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in 2011: to completely abandon nuclear power and become the only developed country that has thoroughly given up nuclear energy. Germany"s new energy strategy is to accelerate the promotion and use of more renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power to achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions to almost zero.

This decision indirectly promoted China"s photovoltaic industry and high-end wind turbine industry, and also facilitated the construction of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline between Germany and Russia. Another driving force behind Germany"s complete abandonment of nuclear power is the United States. On the surface, the United States sees Germany"s move as a positive signal that large economies can break away from dependence on harmful carbon emissions and move towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly development.

However, some events that followed led to energy shortages in Germany.

Germany"s climate conditions determine that its weather is mostly cloudy, and even with photovoltaic roof programs, the unstable nature of solar power cannot solve Germany"s energy problems.

Germany"s wind power conditions are average, and the country has a small land area, so there is not much land available for developing wind power. At the same time, domestic environmental organizations have been interfering with Germany"s wind power construction, which has made Germany"s wind power projects come to a standstill.

As a result, Germany had to increase imports of coal, natural gas, and other fossil fuels to meet its electricity needs. However, with the unexplained destruction of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline and rising fossil fuel prices due to regional conflicts, Germany had to import natural gas and oil at a higher cost from the United States and the Middle East, leading to energy shortages during the past winter. The United States instead became the ultimate beneficiary of Germany"s abandonment of nuclear power.

Has Germany regretted completely giving up nuclear power?
